Recording and detection

Q1Recording stopped during the night.⌄
Night recording keeps the microphone open for hours with the screen off, so it can be interrupted by the operating system's power-saving policies, the manufacturer's battery optimization, low storage, a drained battery, or a call or another app using the microphone. On Android, turning on Settings → Battery optimization exception helps. When an interruption is detected the app tries to resume where it can and shows the number of interruptions in the morning summary. We recommend charging the phone while recording overnight. New clips are not saved when free storage is low, so check that too.
Q2It also picks up my partner's snoring or the fan.⌄
The app treats every sound louder than the room's background noise (the baseline) by a set margin as an event, and it does not tell whose sound it is. If Settings → Recording → Measure room sound at start is on, the app measures the room's base noise for 30 seconds and treats continuous sounds such as fans and air conditioners as the baseline. If too much is picked up, lower Settings → Recording → Detection sensitivity. A wrongly classified clip can be corrected on the Clips screen with Change label, and the corrected label is reflected in that night's summary.
Q3Is the whole night recorded?⌄
No. Only a few seconds before and after each moment with sound are saved as a short clip (up to 3 minutes per clip); the full night's audio is never stored. There are limits on the number and size of clips per night; once a limit is reached, further clips for that night are not saved and only count toward the number of detections.
Q4When does recording start if I play a bedtime sound?⌄
After the sound ends. Sounds during playback are not recorded. The wake-time setting is only the time at which recording stops; it is not an alarm, and the app does not wake you. On iPhone the microphone indicator at the top of the screen may stay on while bedtime sounds are playing. iOS cannot open the microphone while the phone is locked, so the app opens it in advance; sound received during playback is discarded immediately and is neither saved nor analyzed.

Clips and records

Q5A clip disappeared.⌄
In free use, clip files are deleted automatically 30 days after the night they were recorded (favorited clips are kept). The night's summary numbers and labels remain after the file is gone. Favorite or export the clips you want to keep. After you purchase Unlock all features the default retention becomes unlimited, and you can switch it back to 30 days under Settings → Clip storage → Keep clips for.
Q6Can I export a clip as a file?⌄
Yes. Tap Export clip on the Clips screen and the operating system's share sheet opens so you can send it to mail, a messenger, cloud storage, or any other app. The file is created on your device and does not pass through a Company server. Note that the file name contains the date and time the clip was recorded, so the recipient can see that time. The bedtime sounds bundled with the app cannot be exported or downloaded.
Q7Do my records move to a new phone?⌄
No. Clips and records live only on the device and are excluded from operating-system backups, so they do not transfer automatically. Export any clips you need to keep beforehand. A purchased Unlock all features is reapplied by tapping Settings → Restore purchase with the same store account.
Q8I want to delete my records.⌄
Clips can be deleted one at a time by swiping left in the clip list. To delete everything, delete the app — all clips, night records, tags, and settings are removed from the device. There is currently no function in the app to delete a night record on its own. The Company holds none of your recordings or records, so there is nothing to ask us to delete; requests to delete usage statistics or error records that left the device are explained in the Data Deletion Guide.

Purchases and ads

Q9I purchased, but it is still locked.⌄
Check that you are signed in to the same App Store or Google Play account used for the payment, then tap Settings → Restore purchase. A purchase belongs to the store where it was made, so it does not transfer between the App Store and Google Play. If that does not help, email us with the store receipt number.
Q10I received a code. Where do I enter it?⌄
Tap I have a code on the purchase screen. On iOS the code entry sheet opens inside the app (iOS 16.3 or later); on Android you are taken to the Play Store's redeem screen. A purchase unlocked with a code is also restored with Restore purchase on the same store account.
Q11Where do I request a refund?⌄
Payments are handled by the Apple App Store and Google Play, so refunds are requested from the store. On iOS use reportaproblem.apple.com; on Android, Play Store → Payments & subscriptions → Order history. The withdrawal period and its limits are in Section 9 of the Terms of Service.
Q12An ad-consent dialog or tracking prompt appeared. Can I decline?⌄
Yes. Every feature of the app keeps working if you decline; you simply see non-personalized ads. The ad-consent dialog appears only in regions where the law requires consent, such as the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, where you can change your choice at any time under Settings → Privacy → Ad privacy options. In certain U.S. states, no dialog is shown but the same menu lets you opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for personalized ads; in all other regions this menu does not appear. The iOS tracking choice can be changed at any time under device Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. The only ads are the banners at the bottom of the Morning summary and History screens; there are none while recording or playing sounds. Purchasing Unlock all features removes the ads.

Health and privacy

Q13Does this app tell me about sleep apnea or the quality of my sleep?⌄
No. Moonmic only records the moments at night when sound occurs and logs their count, time, and duration; it does not determine the presence of any condition, the quality of your sleep, or any health risk. It is not a medical device and holds no medical-device certification in any country. The labels and numbers it shows are reference information produced by mechanically sorting sounds picked up by the microphone. If you are concerned about your sleep, talk to a doctor.
Q14Do my recordings leave my phone?⌄
No. Clips, night records, and tags are stored only on your phone, and sound classification happens only on your phone. The only things that leave the device are app usage statistics and error diagnostics (you can turn them off under Settings → Privacy → Send usage statistics and error reports) and the information needed to show ads — none of which include recordings, clips, file names, the times at which sounds occurred, or tags. See the Privacy Policy for details.
